London : Printed for J Senex and W Taylor, 1719 An extremely scarce original copy of William Whiston's work on the Catholic Epistles of St John, Whiston (1667-1752) was a mathematician, theologian and historian - known particularly for his role in the institution of the Longitude Act. He succeeded Isaac Newton as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, but lost the post because of his unorthodox religious views. He published a number of religious works, based on his researches into early Christianity. This copy is bound in later marbled paper, which is sound, if slightly dog-eared. There is an ink '2' to the top of the title page. Contents with decorative headpieces and initial capitals. Text pp 3-93; appendix 94-125; publisher's list 3pp. There is a small burn in the outer margin of pp 4-6; some greek annotation at p 120; and an ink '11' at the bottom of the final page of the catalogue.
