Seattle, Washington: Superior Publishing Company, 1970. First Edition [stated], presumed first printing. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. 192 pages. Oversized book, measuring 10.1/2 inches by 8 inches. The DJ is in a plastic sleeve with a brown border and has been lightly taped to the boards. Name and address or previous owner, and date of 1973, written in ink inside the front free end paper. The previous owner had a long and distinguished career with the United States Federal Railroad Administration. Profusely illustrated with black and white photographs of commuter railroads, maps and graphs of Commuter Railroad lines. Chapter VIII is entitled " Montreal, Toronto, and Detroit". The purpose of this book is to describe the Class 1 Railroad suburban operations since the Depression and their plans for the future. Includes information about commuter railroads in Boston, New York, New York State & Connecticut Service, Long Island and New Jersey Service, Philadelphia, Washington-Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Cleveland, Chicago, San Francisco, Montreal, Toronto, and Detroit. Also includes an Appendix as well as an Index. Patrick C. Dorin was an established railroad author. He worked for the Great Northern Railway while attending Northland College as an undergraduate. Later, he worked for the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway, the Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway, and the Milwaukee Road. Employment in the railroad industry included positions in operations and marketing research, customer service, and cost accounting. He had also served as President of the summer season tourist railroad, the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad at Duluth, Minnesota. Mr. Dorin holds degrees in business administration, marketing, elementary education, and school administration, including a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He has also taught marketing, operations research, transportation, Japanese culture, and school administration courses on a part-time basis for both the University of Wisconsin-Superior and for the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Author or co-author of some twenty railroad books, Mr. Dorin began in 1969 with The Lake Superior Iron Ore Railroads. Other titles to his credit include Everywhere West: The Burlington Route, Canadian Pacific Railway, The Domeliners, Amtrak Trains and Travel and The Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railway.
