Postmarked and dated Premier Jour Moroni 1776-1976. The Comoro Islands pays tribute to America's Bicentennial celebration with this 35 franc stamp and cachet dedicated to the theme 'Conquest of the West'. Both the stamp and the cachet geature a covered wagon, the primary means of transportation used by the many thousands of European immigrants on their journey west. Portraits of Daniel Boone and William 'Buffalo Bill' Cody dominate the left postition of the stamp. They, along with Meriweather Lewis, William Clark, John Fremont and Kit Carson forged a vital link with th west early in the history of this young nation. The independence of America, one of the first nations to throw off colonial rulings, was an inspiration to the Comoro Islands to build a nation respectful of liberty, justice and protection of the citizens rights and duties. A 1974 national referendum favored independence with only the non-Muslim island of Mayotte voting to remain associated with France. In 1975 the French government decided to allow each of the main islands to decide its own fate. Left side of envelope has map of US and Conquete de L'Quest.
