About This Item

London: Printed for E. Curll and J.Hodges, 1739. Sixth Edition. The Compleat Gamester was the first English book on gaming and remained the standard English-language reference work on the subject until the appearance of Edmond Hoyle's Mr. Hoyle's Games Complete in 1750. It was originally published in 1674 and attributed to Charles Cotton by publishers of later editions, to which additional updated material and rules were added. The present version, which incorporates Richard Seymour's The Court Gamester (first: 1719), was first published by Curll in 1734. The work includes instructions and rules for card games (ombre, quadrille, quintile, picquet, basset, faro, whist, all-fours, cribbage, put, lue, brag, &c.), chess, English and French billiards, riding, horse racing, archery, cock fighting and bowling. 12mo. pp. xii, 324. engraved frontis. woodcut headpiece & initials. contemporary calf, rebacked, corners renewed
