S. Green. Fair. 1823. Hardcover. These are two separate booklets on short hand being sold together. The FIRST BOOKLET is by J. Dodge, "A Complete System of Stenography or Short-Hand Writing", published in 1823. It has 32 pages plus a blank end sheets front and back. The pages are age toned. The title pages states "Containing Ten Copper-Plate Engravings", but I count only nine. There are plates III through X in the back, which are charts and samples of short-hand and a plate of a diagram between pages 6 and 7. The covers are heavily worn, covered in marbled paper, the spine is open and the back end sheet and cover detached. It is just under 8" tall. The SECOND BOOKLET lists no author except to say "An Eminent Short Hand-Writer" and it is entitled "The Elementary Principles of Short Hand, Exemplified in a Variety of Easy Lessons...." It was published in London by J. Owen in 1793. It consists of a total of 26 pages, although the last page says (16) and at the bottom it declares "FINIS". Owen in 1793. It consists of a total of 26 pages, although the last page says (16) and at the bottom it declares "FINIS". This booklet has no covers and the first two sheets are detached from the rest. There is age toning and foxing present. This booklet is 8" tall. This booklet also contains charts and examples of short hand. 12 mo. (7 x 4 1/2 inches) Glasgow, 1700. First Edition. (viii) 112 pages. Good condition: early nineteenth century half calf, marbled boards, considerable wear to hinges (front hinge split, but holding), title in gilt on spine.Walter Herries (or Harris) was a pamphleteer who participated in the first Darien "adventure." Upon his return to England, he was offered inducements by English politicians to write a book that would ruin the reputation of the members of the Darien Company. His book was "Declared by a royal proclamation to be a 'false, scandalous, and traitorous libel'."
This book, attributed to Ridpath, is an answer to Herries's book, and an attack on English politicians. Ridpath was a Scottish journalist who wrote and supported Whig interests against the Tories.

Description:
This book is bound with leather covers and a cloth spine. There is a label on the front cover which is not readable. New endsheets have been added at some point in the book's long history, but the original endsheets and covers are present. There is a former owner's inscription on the original front endsheet. Pages are intact and the binding is tight. The book contains black & white drawings of muscles, bones, and bandages. There is an index for medicines and an extensive table of contents of body parts, diseases, syndromes, and treatments. Printed in the year 1846, the book itself is, in essence, a time capsule that portrays how medicine was practiced aboard an early nineteenth century sailing ship. This will make a wonderful addition to the library of the collector of medical memorabilia.
