About This Item

New York: Scribner, 2000. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Near fine - a very neat, bright copy. First impression. Octavo in original green paper-covered boards quartered with black textured boards, gilt title to spine, 347 pages. Dustjacket has slight rubbing to lower edge. Beautifully crafted narrative structure, deftly drawn characters, and a real feeling for place make this a highly engaging and satisfying novel. Set in bayside Melbourne, Paris and Chartres in 1923; Emily has to balance her own sense of identity against the demands of her father's expectations, her husband's ambition, and her unborn child. Winner of the NSW Premier's Prize, and short-listed for the 2001 Miles Franklin Award. Very nice copy.
