About This Item

London, England: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley, in Pall-Mall; and sold by M. Cooper, at the Globe in Pater-Noster Row, 1758. First Edition. Pamphlet. Poor. 8" x 5" octavo. 130 pages. Removed with leather remnants on spine. Paper disintigration and loss on first 7 leaves. Nearly half a leaf missing on title-page and half-title. Ink inscription "Conduct of Major Gen. S in North America" on title-page. Heavy browning along fore-edge of first 30 pages, but text is quite readable. After the first 30 pages, the paper is remarkably clean with only light foxing throughout. Table of army provisions on final page. (Sabin, 80544) (ESTC T31144). Shirley was the longest-serving governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay (1741-1749 and 1753-1756). He organized the 1745 Siege of Louisbourg during King George's War, and was active in the French and Indian War. (Wikipedia) This account, most likely written by his secretary William Alexander, details his military career.
