Everyman's Library edition, in the publisher's deluxe quarter pigskin, the most expensive of the four bindings in which it was issued, and produced in smaller numbers than the others. The remaining three binding styles that the classic reprint series offered in its earliest years were full cloth, full leatherette, and a library binding. This edition was first published in 1907. This groundbreaking and influential work presents an account of the author's hallucinations, ecstasies, and torments as a result of taking opium. Published in 1821, it was the first book in English to deal in detail with drug addiction. It also laid the intellectual foundation for most of the modern drug literature of Cocteau, Burroughs, and other Beats, and was a landmark text in the development of confessional autobiography. Octavo. Original brown quarter pigskin, spine lettered in gilt within frame incorporating Everyman's Library monogram, brown cloth sides ruled in blind, linen endpapers, edges brown. Decorative title page and textual frontispiece with intricate woodcut floral border in the arts and crafts style. Spine lightly sunned, else fresh: a near-fine copy. Synopsis
Confessions of an English Opium-eater is an autobiographical account written by Thomas de Quincey about his addiction to laudanum - a combination of opium and alcohol - and its effects. He first had it published anonymously in the London Magazine in 1821, but it was released as a book the following year.
