About This Item
Durrie & Peck and J.W. Barber, 1836. The early days of Middlesex County, CT, and its various communities -- Middletown, Haddam, Chatham, Chester, Durham, East Haddam, Killingworth, and Saybrook --are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 35 Page Booklet reprinted from the 1836 edition of John Warner Barber's Connecticut Historical Collections. The 8 1/2 x 11" spiral-bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper, with the print enlarged for easier reading. A sheet of clear vinyl has been added to protect the front cover. INSERTED IN THE BOOKLET is a copy of the 1836 Map of Connecticut which accompanied the Barber book. The map is printed in black ink on a parchment-like paper. Among the many and varied topics in the booklet are: the names of Early Settlers and noted residents; early industries; inscriptions from graves and excerpts from newspapers, including one on reaction to the Stamp Act in 1765; name derivations; early church histories; the plan of Main Street in Middletown; Wesleyan University; Judge Hugh White; the poet Richard Alsop; humor and poetry; Indian incidents; Missionary David Brainerd's birthplace and life; the launching of the U.S. Ship Connecticut; subterranean noises and earthquakes; Abel Buell, an ingenious mechanic; Saybrook in the War of 1812; Lady Fenwick's Monument and Major Andross rebuffed by Capt. Bull.
