Description:
1783 Eboracum YORK Cathedral Illustrated England Drake Architecture Windows
Francis Drake, not to be confused with the famous explorer of the same name, was an 18th-century English historian who is best-remembered for his book 'Eboracum'. Eboracum was the name given to the ancient city built by ancient Rome in what is now modern-day York. Having been fascinated by ancient manuscripts, Drake began compiling a history of the city of York focusing on the cathedral and city history. The popularity of the book propelled Drake to publish an abridged version of the work focusing solely on the cathedral itself.
This 1783 edition of Drake's history of York Cathedral includes lists of archbishops and numerous folding engraved views of the cathedral including impressive views of the façade and interior floor plan.

First edition, limited to just 100 numbered copies, signed by both Casson and Betjeman on the first leaf (this being #9). Designed by Nigel Paige and produced and printed at the Royal College of Art, London. 4to. Unpaginated. Card wrappers with a wire spiral binding at the upper edge (and thereby resembling an artist's sketchbook). Twenty-five watercolour sketches, originally commissioned by 'The Illustrated London News', with drawing captions and both Betjeman's two-page introduction and Casson's brief preface reproduced in facsimile of the author's holograph. The lower edges lightly spotted, encroaching just a fraction to occasional leaf margins, and with just a hint of very faint soiling to the upper wrapper. Very good indeed. Description:
Signed and inscribed by author. The late architect O'Neil Ford was designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Council on the Arts; the only individual to ever be given that title. He was a regional architect who incorporated modern European design with early Texas architecture. He designed a lot of really great buildings, public and private. The author, the late David Dillon, was the architecture critic for the Dallas Morning News for 25 years. He was widely respected and, for many, a driving force for Dallas urban design during the important last 2 decades of the 20th century. He had a national stature. Anyone interested should read his obituary from 2010. This book is Dillon's opus to a legend. The book and dust jacket are in fine/near fine condition with only slight shelf wear. The corners are square, and the pages are clean and unmarked. The book comes from the estate of an important local civic leader who is quoted in Dillon's obituary. Casa del HerreroHouse of the Blacksmithstands today as one of the most fully developed and intact examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. It was designed and built between 1922 and 1925 as a second house for George Fox Steedman, a St. Louis industrialist. Thought principally to be the work of George Washington Smith, the architect, Steedman himself generated many ideas during the initial design phase that were both a blessing and curse to Smith. Steedmans vision prevailed, and throughout the decade following the houses initial completion, he continued to rework both house and garden, engaging the architects Lutah Maria Riggs, Edwards, Plunkett & Howell, and Floyd Brewster, and garden… Read More
