About This Item
London and Glasgow: Richard Griffin, 1856. Book. Fine. Half-Leather. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First edition. Half brown morocco over marble boards, all edges marble, matching marble endpapers. In three volumes (complete), pp. (7), 507, including index to Volume I; (5), 544, including index to Volume II; and (5), 512, including index to Volume III. Lord Brougham was a tireless reformer responsible for virtually all the freedoms we enjoy today: a scientist, passionate abolitionist, a voice for the laboring man and woman, an advocate for educational and economic opportunity for all. Lord Brougham went up against all the entrenched interests of his day. A founder of the Edinburgh Review, he wrote over 300 articles in just the first few years. These essays form a window into his much more extensive body of writings. They include Rhetorical Articles (Cicero, Demosthenes, the Pulpit, Lord Erskine); History and Historical Memoirs (George III and IV, Queen Caroline, William Pitt, Walpole); Foreign Policy of Great Britain; Constitutional Questions, including Parliamentary Reform; Political Economy and Finance; Criminal Law; Physical Science; and Miscellaneous Literary and Historical subjects. For many years, Lord Brougham used his platform in the Edinburgh Review to support the causes he championed. This group of essays specifically omit his works on slavery, charitable institutions and education, as these were determined by the editors to be found within British Parliamentary papers. Invaluable for understanding the history of liberal democratic reform and legislation. Some light rubbing to boards. Scarce, only one set listed in COPAC. Fine..
