About This Item

London: Sold by J. Roberts, 1739. 3-29pp, [1]. Without half-title. Disbound. Title-page separated from text-block. A tract by politician Horatio Walpole (1678-1757) regarding the Convention of El Pardo, a treaty between Great Britain and Spain designed to resolve issues regarding the freedom of the seas and ensuing smuggling operations. Delegates agreed that Britain would receive damages for harm done to vessels and crews during Spanish boardings, and that Spain be compensated in return for the nonpayment of proceeds from the Asiento - the permission given by the government to trade slaves in Spanish colonies. The convention proved exceedingly unpopular with the South Sea Company and British and Spanish merchant captains alike, and by the year's end both nations would violate the treaty, thus instigating the War of Jenkins' Ear. ESTC T34056.. First edition. 8vo.

Antiquates Ltd

Antiquates Ltd was established by Tom Lintern-Mole in 2007; we travel far and wide to buy, sell, and advise on rare books and manuscripts.

Concentrating on hand-press printing and early modern manuscripts, we pride ourselves on offering a varied selection of antiquarian works on a diverse range of subjects, leaning towards the interesting, the important, and the unusual.

We have a countryside bookshop in Wareham; we also regularly issue catalogues - do ask if you would like to be added to our mailing list - and frequently exhibit at regional and national book fairs in London, Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, and York.

We also offer a valuation service (for either insurance or probate purposes), as well as advice on library development.
