About This Item

Durham, N.C.: Duke University, Center for International Studies, 1987. xiii, [1], 142 pages. Original printed wraps. [22.7 cm.] Very good. Wraps a bit sun-faded, especially on spine; minor foxing to top edge; internally clean. FIRST EDITION. PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION BY PHELPS, dated in the year of publication, on the title page. It is addressed to Doug O'Dell, who was the proprietor of Chapel Hill Rare Books in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. While the inscription is unsigned, the handwriting is identical to another item in my inventory that was signed by Phelps on the same date. The papers in this collection were written for a symposium held in honor of Phelps on the occasion of his retirement from Duke University, where he was a longtime professor of German. Phelps was also a pioneer in the use of computers in foreign language education. In addition to tributes to Phelps by the editors, the volume includes: "Melville's German Streak" by Harrison Hayford: "Recent Trends in the West German University System" by R. Taylor Cole; "Betrachtungen in der Deutsch-Amerikanischen Kulturlandschaft " by Ernst Igendaay, "From Heaven to Earth : Locating German-American Heimat" by Christopher Schweitzer, "Eduard Bertz vs. Johannes Schlaf: the Debate on Whitman's Homosexuality in Germany" by Hans-Joachim Lang; and "Germany's Literary Impact on America's Contemporary South (1950-1980)" by Hans Galinsky.
