About This Item

Twain, Mark [Clemens, S. L.] CONVERSATION AS IT WAS BY THE SOCIAL FIRESIDE IN THE TIME OF THE TUDORS [Philadelphia? Printed for the Flatulence Society of Pittsburgh, 1917] First illustrated edition, one of 150 copies printed. Small folio, French-folded, on Japan vellum, with copperplate etchings inserted. Original three-quarter vellum and purple silk sides. Some aging of spine and wear along edges, but a very good copy. In this copy the initial letters have not been rubricated as usual; perhaps an undistributed copy. Both Meine and Haas date this volume 1916, but the frontispiece and illustrations (by Josef Pierre Nuyttens, 1885-1960) are inserted etchings dated 1917 in the plates. Previous editions (1894 and 1903, for example) had pictorial initial letters, but this was the first edition to have full-page illustrations, and is by far the most lavish edition of this work ever published. Meine 6. Haas 6.
