About This Item

Boston: D. Lothrop and Co. ; Franklin and Hawley Streets. Very Good. [1884]. Hardcover. Clean and secure in original pictorial boards, chipping at spine ends, one small scrape to front board; lacks frontispiece. Text printed in double columns, unpaginated. OCLC 25695505 A charming illustrated edition of this series of stories about a cooking club formed for the girls of Tu-Whit Hollow. "Yes, a cooking club -- a series of little daytime parties for you and the other girls. They will be given, first at one house, and then another. You all will wear your every-day dresses. You will cook your own refreshments while at the club." The stories of the meetings evolve around the preparations for and baking of bread, etc., from the hop yeast to the final product. Profusely illustrated with charming wood engravings, some signed "Kilburn" in the plate -- Samuel Smith Kilburn (1831—1903) was an accomplished engraver in Boston. D. Lothrop and Company was at this location (Franklin and Hawley Streets) from 1875 until about 1887. Publisher's advertisements on endpapers include "WIDE-AWAKE S" which is the volume for 1884. .
