Frontispiece illustration, with 27 plates, two folding, and one folding genealogical chart. San Francisco: John Henry Nash, 1929. First edition. Laudatory biography of Cornelius Cole (1822-1924), a California pioneer who served a single term in the United States House of Representatives as a Republican representing California from 1863 to 1865, and another term in the United States Senate from 1867 to 1873. When he died in 1924 at age 102 he was the oldest former U.S. Senator in American history, and has yet to be surpassed. Errata slip tipped-in at the rear. Signed and dated in the year of publication by Phillips on a prefatory blank leaf. From the James S. Copley Library, with the San Diego newspaper publisher and philanthropist's bookplate to the front pastedown. Full marbled cloth binding, with a gilt-stamped leather spine label. A big of minor scuffing and sun fading along the spine, with some general fading and negligible edgewear to the publisher's slipcase; otherwise very good. Signed by Author.
