8vo. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1918. 8vo, x, 147, (1), (2, ads) pp. Original brown paper wrapped boards printed in dark green, white endpapers, original gray dust-jacket printed in black. Paper lightly bubbled, dust-jacket toned with a little wear to the top edge of the front panel, spine panel with water staining and with a 1.25 inch chip to the head, now properly conserved, binding tight and pages clean and without foxing. § First edition, second issue with page 3 unnumbered and Chicago Poems priced $1.35 on rear of dust-jacket. Sandburg won a Pulitzer for this collection in 1919; he would go on to win two more over the course of his career. After his death in 1967 President Lyndon B. Johnson wrote of him "Carl Sandburg was more than the voice of America, more than the poet of its strength and genius. He was America.
