According to the title page this volume " was not published and only one hundred copies printed" Athough not stated this edition must have been printed for private circulation. In a short preface it is stated "The following correspondence between Mr.Pitt and Charles 4th Duke of Rutland was preserved by the Duchess his widow, after his untimely decease in 1787, until her own in 1831, and was lately and unexpectedly found by the present Duke in arranging her Graces paper ", The book plate is that of Alexander Cochrane presumably a descendant of Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane 1758-1832 ( Fairbairns Book of Crests 1905 Edition) The book bears an inscription on front blank "Given to me by His Grace The Duke of Rutland. Alexander Cochrane" There was an edition of the letters published in 1890.The letters deal with the period 1781-1787 when Rutland was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. A very scarce item.
