New York: Harper & Brothers, 1889. Handsomely bound first edition of this two-volume set. Compiled letters of this noted and well-travelled historian, together which form a fascinating autobiography. Three quarter tan calf leather over marbled boards, slightly raised spine bands, dual spine labels in black, gilt decorated compartments, top edges gilt, other edges uncut, marbled endpapers, each volume approximately ten inches tall and six and a half inches wide, frontis portrait in volume I, 395 + 423 pages. A presumably unread set with many of the pages unopened (still connected at the outer edges). Light shelfwear, mainly rubbing and light scuffing to the extremities, small scuffs to the lower spine labels of each volume, minor speckling to the undecorated calf, good joints/hinges, sound text blocks, name of H. A. Mandeville written at the top of each title page with the same name stamped at the bottom of each, small finger smudge to title page of second volume, pages otherwise very clean… Read More
