About This Item
Welty, Eudora. COUNTRY CHURCHYARDS. Jackson: University of Mississippi Press, 2000. First edition, one of 150 numbered copies. Original grey-green cloth, gilt, slipcased, as issued. As new. Introduction by Elizabeth Spencer (a fellow writer, and life-long friend of Welty). The publisher's original announcement accurately describes the book: "For many years Eudora Welty wished to produce a book about country churchyards. Published at long last, in her ninety-first year, this book includes ninety of her photographs along with a conversation and her memories of the 1930s and 1940s when she rambled through Mississippi cemeteries taking pictures. She recalls poignant and sometimes chilling experiences that occurred." The book also includes evocative passages from her novels and short stories about graveyards and funerals. The trade edition (7,000 copies) is still in print; this deluxe limited edition, originally published at $150, went quickly out of print.
