About This Item

New York - London: Fleming H. Revell Company, 1907. Second Edition . Trade Paperback. Very Good. 5 1/4" x 8. 251 Pages.Greenboards with gold lettering to front and spine. Binding is loose at the endpapers but holding for now. Four inked lines of ownership dated Aug 22, 1908. Charles Aked was born in Nottingam, England, where he grew up and attended Midland Baptist College and University College. He started his work as a Baptist minister in Syston in 1886; and from 1890 until 1906, he ministered in Liverpool, where he was a strong advocate of temperance. In 1907, he immigrated to America, accepting a pastorship at Fifth Avenue Baptist Church in New York City. He was a popular lecturer and preacher, and he published many of his sermons. The sermons contained in this volume are all " morning sermons" -the preacher will understand what the phrase is intended to cover. They' are evangelical, but scarcely evangelistic. They are in the main addressed to those who are already, more or less closely attached to the Church. They represent, with two exceptions, the preaching of a few months, for they followed each other in almost orderly succession. Hence, amid variety of subject and treatment, there is similarity of mood. For a preacher has his moods like other men, and, if he is wise, he preaches out of the mood of the day and the hour. If he is living a full, well-rounded life there is little danger of monotony, even though the mood holds him through a year of preaching; while, in the course of his life's ministry, he will speak as a living man to living men and women, to their ever varying circumstances and needs.
