About This Item
An appealing copy of this popular guide to romance, written by a seasoned widower who "has been thrice married, but is still young enough to be an especial favorite of the ladies."
Inspired to authorship by his own "difficulties, vexations, and mortifications" as a first-time suitor, Harry Hazen addresses this guide to the shy young suitor, as well as "to any lover whose sweetheart is coquettish or refractory." In addition to general considerations, including "General Qualifications" and "Suitable Age" for marriage (men ought to wait until twenty-five, lest they "deteriorate the intellect" of their first-born children; women, on the other hand, "may marry at fourteen or as soon as she attains her full stature..."), as well as "How to Begin a Courtship," Hazen suggests courses of action for winning over "Prude," "Proud," "Bashful," and "Wayward" girls, as well as heiresses, actresses, "literary" ladies, widows, old maids, and more. A short section on how to "Pop the Question" is followed by sample letters.
OCLC lists five copies, at NYU, Trinity, Yale, the Clements Library, and AAS.
