Synopsis

This is a story about a monster. Not a dragon or a mythological beast, but a very real, very destructive monster--crystal meth--that takes hold of seventeen-year-old Kristina Snow and transforms her into her reckless alter-ego Bree. Based on her own daughter's addiction to crystal meth, Ellen Hopkins' novel-in-verse is a vivid, transfixing look into teenage drug use. Told in Kristina's voice, it provides a realistic portrayal of the tortured logic of an addict.

Reviews

On Jan 9 2010, Discardedgenius said:
This book is amazingly powerful.., currently trying to overcome a drug addiction myself right now, this helped me alot. Ellen is able to put the feelings right down in words, that may scare some people, but I have found this book to be comforting, helpful, and understanding of the addict. I have shared the book with a friend, and I can only hope that she passes it on when she is done with it.

This account of how quickly an average teen can be thrust into a world of drugs was a real eye opener. As a parent, it’s easy to think “not my child” and I am sure Kristina felt that way about herself before “Bree” took over. The way this book is written, in verse, creates a powerfully dramatic narrative. Although this may be a quick read, a story within a story is discovered by reading down the columns. I would recommend this book to every teen and parent.
