About This Item

viii+136 pages with plates, figures and index. Quarto (10 1/4" x 8 /4") issued in reddish brown cloth with red lettering to spine. This volume explores the multicolored Cole ceramic wares excavated at the Sitio Conte in central Panama during the 1930s. The Coclé culture was a hierarchical and centralized society that flourished about a thousand years ago. Many of the ceramic wares were unearthed in caches and burials of elite figures. Coclé artists decorated their polychromes with a combination of geometrical forms and lively, graphic depiction of curious birds and beasts. The author sees in these polychromes a semiotic code expressing sociological and cosmological concepts of the Coclé Culture. Condition: Jacket extremities lightly rubbed, some closed edge tears else a near fine copy in a very good to fine jacket.
