DJ has some wear and soiling. Dr. Steven A. Channing has become a scholar of the American South and an award winning television producer/director and filmmaker of documentaries having to do with the culture of the South. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1968 and went on to write academic works on the Confederacy and the history of Kentucky. Since retiring from teaching, he has been mostly active in the documentary field. He received a Guggenheim fellowship honor in 1976. A dramatic, provocative account of the actions and attitudes behind the event that began the Civil War. The atmosphere of mass arrests, feverish attempts to arm for self-defense, vigilante actions, and irrational accusations became the order of the day, and this atmosphere predisposed South Carolinians toward the great defiance that would rend the Union. Southerners came to see the North in general and Lincoln in particular as mortal threats to their way of life, and secession emerged as the inevitable, logical conclusion of their beliefs and perceptions. This book was awarded The Allan Nevis History Prize.
