Contemporary three-quarter calf and cloth, spine with raised bands, leather label. Bit rubbed, The author was a captain in the Royal Navy. He describes travel from China to Japan, Japanese scenery in Nagasaki, the Dutch establishment in Japan, a visit by the governor of Nagasaki, an earthquake at Shimoda, and a visit to Yedo, as well as the customs and attitudes of the Japanese toward westerners.
