About This Item

Jonathan Cape, 1948. First Edition. Hardcover. Good/Poor. The dust jacket is quite worn. There are large chips out of the top and bottom of the spine, obscuring the title and cutting out the publisher's details completely. The edges of the jacket are torn and creased. In spite of this, the jacket remains for the most part intact. Internally, there is a previous retailer's sticker on the front pastedown, and there are two signatures from previous owners on the front end page. There is heavy tanning and foxing on the first and last few pages and some light and sporadic foxing throughout, but the pages within are clean and complete. The book is cocked, but the binding is sound, and it is well-preserved in cellophane. JK[RF25]. Our orders are shipped using tracked courier delivery services.

Synopsis

Cry, the Beloved Country is a novel by South African author Alan Paton. It was first published in New York in 1948 by Charles Scribner's Sons and in London by Jonathan Cape; noted American publisher Bennett Cerf remarked at that year's meeting of the American Booksellers Association that there had been "only three novels published since the first of the year that were worth reading ... Cry, The Beloved Country, The Ides of March, and The Naked and the Dead.
