About This Item

Washington DC: National Geographic Society, 1923. Presumed First Edition/First Printing. Hardcover. Very good. [8], 207, [1] pages. Index. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Some edge and page soiling. National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its thick square-bound glossy format with a yellow rectangular border and its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. It is available in a traditional printed edition and through an interactive online edition. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. The National Geographic Society (NGS), headquartered in Washington, D.C., United States, is one of the largest nonprofit scientific and educational institutions in the world. Its interests include geography, archaeology and natural science, the promotion of environmental and historical conservation, and the study of world culture and history. The National Geographic Society's logo is a yellow portrait frame - rectangular in shape - which appears on the margins surrounding the front covers of its magazines and as its television channel logo. The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published on September 22, 1888, nine months after the Society was founded. Starting with its January 1905 publication of several full-page pictures of Tibet in 1900-1901, the magazine changed from being a text-oriented publication closer to a scientific journal to featuring extensive pictorial content, and became well known for this style. This is the first time the National Geographic Society issued anything other than annual or semi-annual indexes. The Index gives by reference and cross reference all subjects treated with more than passing comment in The Geographic from 1899 to 1922. Authors, countries, cities, provinces, districts, states, mountains, lakes, seas, animals, tribes, religions, customs, ruins, trees, and flowers are alphabetically indexed, with the number of pages devoted to the topic and the number of illustrations accompanying the particular articles, together with the volume, month, year, and page reference. Special divisions will also be found, in which are listed illustrations in color and maps (both sketch maps and map supplements).
