Egyptologist Barbara Mertz, writing as Elizabeth Peters, used her training to craft the world and work of Peabody, a no-nonsense woman of hard-earned experience - and major antecedent to other beloved female sleuths like Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone (who debuted in A IS FOR ALIBI a year later) and J.D.
