About This Item

[Nagoya].: No details of publisher.. (circa1985). Colour photographic poster showing the Japanese Antarctic Ice Breaker, Fuji, in the Antarctic ice, 73 x 51.5cm, some light creasing with small repaired tears at edges and crease at upper corner, very good condition. The Japanese Antarctic ice breaker, Fuji, was in service between 1965 and 1983 transporting staff and goods between Japan and the Japanese Antarctic base over this 18 year period. After Fuji was taken out of the service, it was moored in Nagoya Port and is now on permanent display. The exhibitions and displays which now accompany the ship's display show the Japanese effort that has been put into Antarctic research and the difficulties the crew and research staff encountered along the way. This poster was produced for a large scale Antarctic exhibition held at Chita Beach Land around 1985 marking the ship's arrival in Nagoya as a permanent display. The Japanese text running along the top of the poster translates into English as "Minus 40 degrees. I am in the middle of Antarctic" in Japanese. .
