ont> Douai, M Mairesse : Douai, 1712 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. The pocket sized devotional work from the eighteenth century produced by the Catholic seminary in Douai, France. This devotional work is a selection of daily exercise and devotions specifically aimed at young ladies and gentlewomen pensioners at the Monastery of the English Canonesses Regulars of the Holy Order of S Augustin at Bruges. Douay was a Catholic seminary in Doai, France. It was first established in 1561 before being suppressed in 1793. It is known for its Doay-Rheims Bible. The Holy Order of S Augustin at Bruges, or the English Convent in Bruges was first founded in 1629. The Convent still stands today as one of the only English Catholic religious houses in Continental Europe. One noted Prioress of the English Convent was Mother Mary More, daughter of Thomas More and Catherine Gifford. She is the last lineal descendant of Sir Thomas More, the English Lord High Chancellor of England and author of 'Utopia'. More was prioress of the convent many years after the publication of this work. With a contents to the rear listing the different types of prayer and meditations listed to this work. A fascinating Catholic devotional work, published at a time where Catholicism had largely been attacked in Europe due to the Enlightenment. A scarce work, in a charming pocket-sized format. Condition: In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart. Front joint is split with the cords showing. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Light rubbing to the joints. Internally, generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are generally bright with occasional scattered spots to pages. Overall Condition: Very Good.
