Zaehnsdorf signed binding in full red-brown hard grain morocco, covers framed with gilt stamped double rule; spine with 5 raised bands, gilt rule framed panels and letters; all edges gilt; marbled end papers in combed nonpareil pattern; India paper. This has been rebound with old hard-grain morroco under saved original spine and covers; the newer and older leathers are a near match; 'Bound by Zaehnsdorf, London England' stamped in gilt on the front cover turn-in at the tail edge appears to be on the newer leather. Covers and spine are clean, lightly scuffed; the original covers and spine have slight chipping at edges; light rubbing at cover fore corners; joints are supple; tightly bound; interior hinges are cloth; owner name in pencil on front fly leaf 'E Bunker'; clean interior; text pages very slightly age darkened at edges. 350 illustrations by author. Venetiis [Venice]: Simon Occhi, 1773. Hardcover. Near Fine. Editio secunda. 2 volumes in 1: 148, 144 p.; 18 cm. Contemporary vellum with ink spine title in an old hand. Woodcut title vignettes (printer's device?), initials, and endpiece. Edited by Johann Erhard Kapp. Inscription in an old hand on one page of first part, and marginal notation on p. 110 of second part in same hand. Occasional mark in light blue or red pencil. In Near Fine Condition: vellum is slightly rubbed; marginalia, as described; otherwise clean and tight.

One of 100 large-paper copies printed on hand-made paper. Overall size c.9.3/8 x 6.1/4 inches. c.24 x 16 cm. Original lithographic portrait of the author by Wilson Steer as frontispiece. pps 8 + 204. Usual browning to free end-papers o/w internally near fine. Binding slightly soiled and rubbed, more so on corner tips but a very good copy of the fragile boards.

Scarce volume from the 6-volume "DICKENS' LITTLE FOLKS" series which was "undertaken with a view of supplying the want of a class of books for children, of a vigorous, manly tone, combined with a plain and concise mode of narration." "With this view, the career of [Little Paul has] been detached from the large mass of matter with which [he was] originally connected, and presented, in the author's own language, to a new class of readers, to whom the little volumes will, we doubt not, be as attractive as the larger originals have so long proved to the general public."Condition:Clean covers and spine with no stains; 1" cloth tear at the top-right corner of the spine; horizontal crease across the front cover which is also visible on the opposite side of the board. Number 45 of 50 copies on Holland with an extra suite of illustrations on chine, slight foxing to some pages of the extra suite. Text in French: 283 pages plus suite.A very nice copy in a contemporary binding, spine slightly faded with minimal rubbing to edges.
