About This Item

R, Hilla. DANCING COUPLE (NOEL COWARD AND GERTRUDE LAWRENCE?). Pencil on paper, not dated, but likely 1930-1931. Signed in pencil lower left.12 3/4 x 8 5/8 inches. Hansomely framed to 19 x 15 1/2 inches. The subjects of the drawing bear a strong resemblance to Gertrude Lawrence and Noel Coward, who starred together in his play Private Lives in 1930 (London) and 1931 (New York). R was in London in 1930 with the Guggenheims and back in New York in 1931, so it is not unlikely that she would have seen the play.
