About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1975. First US edition, first printing. First US edition, first printing. Inscribed presentation copy. Publisher's original quarter brown cloth over paper covered boards, stamped in blind to the upper board, with titles in gilt to the spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with drawings throughout by Jill Bennett. Top edge brown. An excellent near fine copy, the binding square and firm with a little rubbing at the extremities. The contents, with spotting to the closed text block edge, are otherwise clean throughout and without previous owner's inscriptions or stamps. The brown top stain remains vivid and without fading. Complete with lightly creased dustwrapper that remains without fading, loss or tears. Not price-clipped ($5.95 to the upper front flap). Together with a signed original program for a unique production of the musical play Fantastic Mr. Fox. The play was specially commissioned for the Thornbury Arts Festival '76 and starred Roger Whittall in the title role, with Roald Dahl in attendance. Both items are housed in a bespoke quarter morocco solander case. An excellent example with a fantastic provenance. The book is warmly inscribed by the author in black ink on the front free endpaper "To Roger [Whittall] / The Great Mr. Fox / With love / from / Roald Dahl / 12 May 1976". The program is signed by Roald Dahl in brown ink and the composer and conductor Adrian Beaumont in black. A fabulous pairing of Roald Dahl presentations. The publication of Danny the Champion of the World marked the first time that both the UK and US printings were issued simultaneously in first edition with drawings by the same illustrator.
