About This Item

Random House Trade Paperbacks. Softcover. Very Good. Dante Club" (ISBN: 9780812971040): "Dante Club" is a captivating historical mystery that weaves together the worlds of literature and crime-solving in 19th-century Boston. Author Matthew Pearl takes readers into the midst of a group of literary luminaries, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes, who are translating Dante's "Inferno" into English. However, when a series of gruesome murders mimicking the punishments of Dante's hell occur, the Dante Club finds itself embroiled in a real-life mystery. Pearl expertly combines elements of literary analysis, historical fiction, and suspense to create a gripping narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats. "Dante Club" is a thrilling journey through the streets of Boston, where literature and crime intersect in a tale of passion, ambition, and the pursuit of justice. Crisp, clean, unread book with some shelfwear/edgewear. May have remainder marks, often with a black dot or similar mark, to the top or bottom edge of the book.

Reviews

On Feb 13 2015, a reader said:
"The Dante Club" is a historical fiction novel laced in the mystery-thriller genre. Historical fiction books are some of my favorite. Matthew Pearl did a wonderful job piecing together this novel. You have a literary group (consisting of three poets, a historian and a publisher) working against odds to translate Dante's "Divine Comedy" in order to bring it to America for the first time ever. In the process of this, someone is going around killing people referencing the book. The group, along with one of the first African American policemen in Boston, are trying to solve the mystery together. I enjoyed how everything fell into place in the end showing that there were keys through-out the book. It also shines a light of real issues of that era. I look forward to reading more of Matthew Pearls books.
