About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1927. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Two copies of Baring's 1927 novel, both stated First Editions. Green cloth boards stamped in yellow. 306, plus [4] pp. ads. 7.75 x 5 inches. Copy #1 (Fair/VG) is in a scarce dust jacket. Boards are heavily spotted from moisture. Front and rear paste-downs are stained, otherwise pages are clean and unaffected. Dust jacket (with green, black, and gold foil design) is rubbed and edge-chipped; not price clipped ($2.50). DJ in archival sleeve. Copy #2 (VG/no jacket). Boards show light soiling; spine faded. Previous owner's name in pencil on ffep. Interior is clean. First published in 1926 in the UK by Heinemann, these are the American first editions of the novel by English author Marice Baring (1874-1945). It is the story of the complexes, complications, and the barriers of misunderstanding within the marriage of Fanny and Michael Choyce, members of the literary and artistic world of London. Daphne Adeane, deceased prior to the start of the novel, and the memory of her, pervade and impact the lives of the characters. Set around the period of the First World War.
