London: Longmans, Green and Co, 1954. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. 7.5" by 5". None. A first edition copy of this poetic novel set on the island of Corfu, by Francis King. The first edition. In the original full cloth binding with the publisher's unclipped dust wrapper. A poetic and melancholy novel set on the island of Corfu. The character-driven story follows two poor children, Anna and Stavro, their cruel father and their uncle, Christo. Francis King was a British novelist and short story writer. In 1951 he won the W. Somerset Maugham Prize for his novel, 'The Dividing Stream', and in 2000 he was awarded the Golden PEN Award for "A Lifetime's Distinguished Service to Literature'. The half title page is present. With the previous owner's signature, dated 1954 to the front free endpaper. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, excellent with little shelf wear. The odd spot to the front paste-down. Previous owner's ink inscription to the front free endpaper. The original unclipped dust wrapper is in excellent condition. Light shelf wear to the edges. Sunning to the spine and the odd light handling mark to the panels. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age-toned but otherwise very bright and clean with just the odd small handling mark throughout. Fine
