Sweeping and colourful as a Homeric epic, this is a novel of the Sioux and Cheyennes in the fateful year of 1876, when they struggled against hopeless odds, for freedom to live in the lands where their fathers were buried. it was a struggle made hopeless yet inevitable by the greedy, white hordes, attracted by the Black Hills gold rush, who called upon the U.S. govwernment to back their illegal invasion. And so for a whole year, several well-equipped armies relentlessly tracked down the free Indians. Remarkably, these armies never defeated the free Indians in an open fight. But the Indians were poorly equipped, and the buffalo on which they lived were vanishing.
