New York: American Tract Society, 1910. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, red cloth boards with large color pictorial label on front. Exterior shows minor spotting and minor wear to the pictorial label. Internal binding is good and text pages are tight except for an area at page 79 where there is a very thin crack starting. Paper is toned due to age and some minor spotting/foxing is present. No signatures or bookplates, no library markings. Front end page does have a dark spot in the upper right corner where a price label once likely sat.

Schauffler. Red cloth with chromolithograph illustration onlaid to front boards from photograph of the smartly dressed author with a scruffier man and woman seated in front of him. Many interior black and white photographs. The author relates his early years growing up on "Dutch Row" in Hudson, New Jersey, where his sampling during his thrice-daily errand to fetch his grandfather pints of mixed ale led to his self-professed "drunkard's habit" at the tender age of ten. He led a life of burglary, vagrancy, homelessness, and served a two-year prison term, ending up "down and out" on New York City's Bowery row, living in various flophouses.
