The flavour, by and large, is one of traditional rural Britain, a time which has only recently disappeared beyond the barrier of living memory. Within these pages we have tried to elaborate upon the themes of David Winter’s sculptures, by imagining how they might have appeared from the inside and by delving further into the work of those craftsmen who have survived the march of time. The thatcher, the wheelright, the cooper, the spinner; they are all fundamental to the inspiration behind David's miniature cottages - for as you will see, the workplace and the home were often one and the same. From the simplicity of the farm labourers’ bothy to the grandeur of Falstaff’s Manor, there is much to be gleaned here of the experiences of our forebears. They led fascinating lives and possessed wonderful skills. Hopefully some of this will be reflected in VILLAGE MEMORIES and be of interest to those of us who populate an entirely different world.
