Ford's son-in-Law, Samuel F. B. Morse, the developer of Pebble Beach and the Del Monte area, to encourage interest in the area. Although the book is often collected now principally for the illustrations of Jo Mora, the author, Tirey L. Ford, is an important Californian as well. He was Attorney-General of California (1898-1902), and a successful San Francisco attorney. He was an acquitted defendant in the San Francisco graft trials following the 1906 earthquake and fire, and was a member of the California State Board of Prison Directors.
