San Francisco: Privately Printed, 1926. First Edition. Illustrated card stock wrappers. Very Good. (xvi) 92 pages. Privately Printed First Edition. Illustrated from period photographs. Engraved New Years greeting card from Senator James D. Phelan affixed to front free endpaper. Qwnership stamp of Marshall Dill on front pastedown and page 50. 4 5/8" x 7". Illustrated card stock wrappers. This was the privately printed souvenir volume of the second annual out of door meeting of the Edwin Markham Chapter of the English Poetry Society of the Teachers' College, San Jose, California, held at Senator James D. Phelan's country estate, Villa Montalvo. The meeting included a luncheon and handing out prizes and laurel wreaths (conferred by tennis champion Helen Wills) to the winners of a poetry competition. In addition, well-known California writers contriubted selections to be included in this volume. Such contributors included Ina Coolbrith, Edwin Markham, Edward DeWitt Taylor, Charles Caldwell Dobie, Charles Warren Stoddard, Mrs. Fremont Older, David Starr Jordan, Sara Bard Field and Robinson Jeffers. A page In Memoriam to George Sterling (who died in 1926) with a photograph of Sterling, is included. The spine and front cover are sunned and there is edgewear, including 1/2" separation at lower front cover, but still a Very Good or better copy overall, and now in a four-mil clear mylar protective envelope.
