Born in South Carolina to enslaved parents, Jacob Tileston Brown (1863-1947) was one of the first African Americans to write Sunday School literature. He served as editor-in-chief of the National Baptist Convention's Sunday School Publishing Board for 23 years. This volume describes itself as "An experimental study, observation and suggestion on the deaconship, by himself, and many of the very best ministers and scholars of the denomination both colored and white.
