Bibliographical essay and index. A collection of letters written by Peyton Skipwith and his children in Liberia. Skipwith was emancipated in 1833 by Virginia planter John Hartwell Cocke. A second collection of letters was written by Peyton's brother George Skipwith and daughter Lucy, who worked as slave driver and houseservant-schoolteacher at Cocke's plantation in Alabama. Letters date from 1834-1865. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 281 pages .
