UK 1st Edition / 1st Printing. 308 pp + ivpp publisher's advertisements. Single black/white map illustration facing Chapter 1. Good, complete condition. Top page edges darkened. Spine darkened, with small tear to cloth at leading spine edge adjacent to title. Occasional marks to boards. Minor slant to text block. Internal spotting, mainly to prelims / page edges. Ownership inscription to front pastedown. Pictorial front panel of original dustwrapper pasted to front endpaper (Barbosa illustration).
Published in the United States under the title Rifleman Dodd. Scarce 1st Edition of this early Forester novel set during the Peninsula War in Portugal, 1810, in which a British Green-Jacket trapped behind enemy lines carries on a guerilla campaign against the French occupying forces. The novel is also a key source-book for Bernard Cornwell's 'Sharpe' series, which includes a reference to Rileman Dodd, the main character, in 'Sharpe's Escape' (2004). Enhanced by the presence of the pictorial front panel of the original dustwrapper.
