About This Item

Jonathan Cape, London, 1967. First Edition. Hardcover. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Foreword by author, notes on chapters, appendix, acknowledgements, bibliography and index. Map illustrated end pages, showing roam 1944. Brown coloured boards with gilt coloured titles in the back strip. Dark blue coloured tint to the top text edge. An accounting of one of the most controversial and horrible episodes to happen in Italy during World War II, the Ardeatine Caves Massacre. In reprisal of partisans attacking German police officers, the Germans shot 10 Italians for every German loss – in total 355 Italians in all. The Pope of the time, Pius XII, remained silent, even though the Italians shot were mostly his own parishioners. Softening and rubbing of the back strip edges along with fading. Bumping of the book corners with rubbing of the panels. Some marks are present to the book panels. Light tanning, foxing and a few marks to the text block edges. The dark blue coloured tint has suffered a couple of spots of loss. Bumping along the top rear edge of the book. Offset tanning and foxing to the end pages with the occasional foxing spots to the page. Original bookseller's sticker to the lower edge of the front paste-down. Previous owners' rubber stamp to the top edge of the verso of the free front end page and lower edge of the title page – the previous owners are well-known Holocaust scholars.
