A first edition of this interesting documentation of the voyage of the US Congress to California, with illustrations. In the publisher's original brown cloth binding. First edition, second issue of the work, with the addition of a map. Written by American Chaplain, Rev. Walter Colton, this work documents his experiences during a naval expedition from the gulf of Mexico to California in 1846-1847. The voyage takes him through Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, Limo, Honolulu and San Francisco. Colton details many different aspects of the passing countries, including the natural encounters, the weather and religion. Illustrated with a frontispiece Commodore R. F. The text sets the scene as the Ship leaves New York harbor: "You are aboard the Ile de France--a completely rebuilt Ile de France." Described are: the Versailles Suite, the Chantilly Suite, the Cafe de Paris; First Class and Cabin Class dining and smoking rooms; theatre; reading room; gymnasium; tourist class salon, smoking room and bar. A 24-inch centerspread from a Lindner painting shows the Ile de France in full color. 12" x 8.25" Originally launched in 1927, the S.S. Ile de France was converted to a troopship in 1941. In 1947, the ship was returned to France, rebuilt, and launched on her second maiden voyage in 1949. This brochure celebrates the post-war, transatlantic Ile de France.

A very nice copy of a handsome publication. Dust jacket is heavily soiled, chipped and missing a large piece from rear panel.
