About This Item

London: Chapman & Hall, 1962. Very Good/Very Good. London: Chapman & Hall, 1962. Revised Edition. Octavo (5.5" x 8"), 252 pp. Six black and white illustrations by the author. White dust jacket with text in dark green and the price "18s net" on bottom edge of front flap. Blue cloth binding with lettering stamped in gold on spine. Dust jacket toned with minor edgewear to top of spine and back cover. Heavy fading to cloth binding from moisture an inch up from bottom edge. Previous owner's name stamped on upper right corner of front free endpaper. Prize bookplate on front pastedown for William Hulme's Grammar School in Manchester. Pages clean and unmarked. Binding tight.

This is the first edition in which Waugh's original text appeared in full. An "emended" version was first published in 1928 because publishers found portions indecent. "The changes are negligible but since the book was being re-set, it seemed a good time to put the clock back a minute or two," Waugh wrote in the Preface.

Synopsis

Decline and Fall is a novel by the English author Evelyn Waugh, first published in 1928. It was Waugh's first novel, based in part on his schooldays at Lancing College and his experience as a teacher in Wales. It is a social satire that employs the author's characteristic black humour in lampooning various features of British society in the 1920s.
