About This Item
Two volumes of Presuhn's souvenir books with 75 vibrant chromolithographs of wall paintings discovered in Pompeii
Les Decorations Murales de Pompeii, 1878.
With 24 chromolithographs after original drawings by Geremia Discanno, lithographed by Victor Steeger, and 51 pages of text in French translated from the German by A. Giraud-Teulon.
Bound with Choix des Plus Belles et Interessantes Peintures de Pompei, avec Plan de la Ville, 1882
With 50 chromolithographs after original drawings by Emile Presuhn and Geremia Discanno
Along with wall paintings from all four eras of design, the plates depict floor mosaics, portraits, statues, plaster-casts of bodies, and plans of houses and the excavations.
Presuhn (1844-1881) was a German archeologist who lived and worked in Italy for almost decade from 1870 publishing books illustrating the latest murals, mosaics and discoveries made in the excavations in Pompeii.
Discanno (1839-1907) was an Italian artist and painter who worked in Naples and Pompeii.
Red cloth binding scuffed and stained, rippled on rear board, gilt title on front cover, white watermarked silk endpapers, some spotting and foxing to text pages and tissue guards, but most plates bright and vivid.
