About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1947 (c.1947) Book Club Edition. This colorful and romantic novel of Montreal and Eastern Canada in the early 1700's is not only a dramatic and turbulent love-story but also a fine re-creation of daily life in Canada while it was still New France. It is essentially the love-story of Elise de Courville-Boissart, the daughter of one of Montreal's oldest families, and Antoine de Brievaux, a young officer in the French Navy. The troubled times that culminated in the French and Indian War play a prominent part in the story. Then, too there was a smouldering enmity between French and English which at last broke into open warfare. Both the Indian raiders and the English invaders play their roles in some of the most exciting scene of the story. Endpapers make up a two-page historical scene. Name to ffep. A sound book in a well-illustrated dust jacket.. Hard Cover. Very Good/Good.
